Antarctica Without the Long Sea Crossing: Silversea’s Fly Cruise Expeditions

There are few journeys left that can genuinely claim to take you to another world. Antarctica is one of them. Silversea’s Fly Cruise programme offers a particularly compelling way to get there, replacing the lengthy sea approach with a flight towards the Antarctic Peninsula and leaving more of the journey for Antarctica itself.
Towering icebergs, immense glaciers, penguin colonies and whales surfacing against an almost impossible landscape make Antarctica less a conventional cruise destination than an expedition to the edge of the map. Yet for some travellers, the time required to reach the continent, and particularly the lengthy sea crossing, has traditionally been one of the reasons for putting the journey off.
Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise programme changes that equation, offering a way to experience one of the most remote places on Earth while spending more of your holiday actually exploring it.
A shortcut to Antarctica
Rather than devoting valuable expedition time to the lengthy sea crossing towards the Antarctic Peninsula, Fly Cruise guests travel south by air before joining one of Silversea’s intimate expedition ships. It is an approach designed for travellers who want the extraordinary landscapes and wildlife of Antarctica but would prefer to concentrate their time around the continent itself.
Once aboard, this remains very much an expedition. Days can bring encounters with penguin colonies, sightings of humpback whales, enormous sculpted ice formations and Zodiac exploration through waters that relatively few people will ever experience. What changes is not the destination or the sense of adventure, but the way you reach it.
Expedition travel with a little more comfort
Antarctica has always rewarded curiosity, but modern expedition cruising no longer requires travellers to choose between adventure and comfort. Silversea operates its Antarctic programme aboard purpose-designed expedition vessels including Silver Endeavour and Silver Wind, combining polar exploration with the accommodation, dining and service associated with a luxury cruise line.
That combination is part of the attraction. A morning might involve stepping ashore among penguins or heading out by Zodiac beneath immense walls of ice, followed by an afternoon back aboard in considerably more comfortable surroundings. For travellers intrigued by Antarctica but less enthusiastic about the traditional image of expedition travel, it makes the continent much more approachable without taking away its essential wildness.
The Cormorant at 55 South
There is also a significant new addition to the Fly Cruise experience. From 2026, guests embarking on a Silversea Antarctica Fly Cruise begin their expedition with Silversea hospitality at The Cormorant at 55 South, extending the experience beyond the ship itself.
It reflects an interesting shift in the way luxury expedition travel is evolving. Instead of treating the journey south simply as the logistical prelude to boarding the ship, Silversea is making the arrival experience part of the overall journey, creating a more seamless transition from conventional travel into one of the world’s most extraordinary environments.
Featured Antarctica voyages
Among the Fly Cruise expeditions currently featured by Silversea are a number of itineraries linking King George Island and Puerto Williams, with voyages aboard both Silver Endeavour and Silver Wind.
Silver Endeavour sails from King George Island to Puerto Williams on 2 January 2027 on a 13-day voyage, while Silver Wind offers a shorter 9-day itinerary on the same route departing 10 March 2027. Later in the year, Silver Endeavour sails from Puerto Williams to King George Island on 16 October 2027 for 13 days, followed by a 9-day Silver Wind departure from King George Island to Puerto Williams on 13 November 2027.
The range of voyage lengths is particularly interesting because Antarctica no longer automatically requires an extended absence from home. A nine-day expedition potentially opens the destination to travellers who may previously have dismissed the idea simply because they could not justify several weeks away.
Why Fly Cruise Antarctica makes sense
There will always be expedition travellers who regard the sea approach as an essential part of reaching Antarctica, and for them the traditional route will retain a special appeal. For others, however, it is the continent itself that matters most: the wildlife, ice, landscapes and extraordinary feeling of standing somewhere genuinely remote.
The Fly Cruise proposition is therefore less about making Antarctica easier and more about concentrating the journey around the experiences that cannot be found anywhere else. For travellers with limited time, those who would prefer to minimise lengthy days at sea, or anyone simply wanting to maximise their time around the Antarctic Peninsula, it presents a very persuasive alternative.
Current Silversea offer
Silversea is currently offering savings of up to 40% on selected voyages, together with reduced deposits from 15%, for qualifying new bookings made by 8 September 2026. The actual saving varies according to the voyage and suite category, with availability capacity-controlled, so the headline discount should be considered alongside the choice of ship, itinerary, dates and accommodation.
That is where some careful comparison becomes worthwhile. Antarctica is a significant journey and the cheapest departure is not necessarily the best-value one if another itinerary, ship or suite is substantially better suited to how you want to travel.
The Lomond Voyages view
Antarctica is not somewhere we would recommend choosing purely from a cruise brochure or headline price. Ship size and expedition capability matter, as do the season, length of voyage, suite choice and the way you reach the continent. Those decisions can fundamentally change the character of the experience.
Silversea’s Fly Cruise programme is compelling because it removes one of the principal barriers for many prospective Antarctic travellers without stripping away what makes the destination extraordinary. You still travel to one of the wildest and most remote places on Earth, but you can spend a greater proportion of your journey experiencing Antarctica rather than simply getting there.
Through Lomond Voyages, we can compare the available Silversea departures, ships and suites and help identify the itinerary that best fits the way you want to experience Antarctica.
